If you don't yet have a partner, no worries - there will be people at the event who are looking and we will pair you then. Alternatively there will be plenty of teams that would be happy to have an additional member. If you're really keen to arrange a partner before the day, send an email to pubgaine at unswoc dot org and we'll sort you out.

Maps will be made available at 5:30pm. It is reccomended that you arrive before this time to maximise the amount of time you have to plan your route. Question sheets will be made available at 6pm when the event starts.

All teams should bring the following items:

  1. Pens for filling in answer sheet
  2. Money for drinks & transport tickets
  3. Plastic sleeves to stop your maps from disintegrating
  4. Public transport timetables. The course is designed with the expectation that you will catch public transport at some point. Some timetables will be available at the start

What's a pubgaine?

A pubgaine is a combination of a Rogaine and a pubcrawl.
Contrary to popular opinion, a Rogaine is not a treatment for hairloss but rather a sport in which teams of 2-5 navigate their way through the bush and attempt to find as may flags (or "controls") as possible within a set period of time. Each control is worth a fixed number of points depending on how difficult it is to find and how far teams must walk to reach it. Events last for between 4 and 24 hours with the top teams walking through the night.

The pubgaine will be an altogether more laid back affair. Rather than scrambling through dense scrub for 24 hours, teams will wander the streets of Sydney for 3 hours and visit pubs rather than controls. Each pub will be worth a set number of points and teams will be given double points at any pub for which they have proof of a drinks purchase.

Note the Pubgaine is in no way affiliated with any Rogaining association.

Event details

The pubgaine will be held on the 2nd of March at 6pm at West Side of Lake Northam, Uni of sydney and finish at the Royal Hotel at 9pm. Registration will open from 5pm and teams are strongly encouraged to arrive early to avoid a rush for maps and clue sheets at the end. There will be an after party starting at the royal from 9pm onwards.
Anyone may enter the event, but we especially encourage members of university Outdoors clubs to enter! The entry fee is $2 per person which will help cover costs such as maps and prizes.

UNSW Outdoors club members should enter at the official trips page. Others should enter by sending an email to pubgaine@unswoc.org stating the names of each team member who will be entering, your team name and a contact phone number.
Entries will be accepted on the day, maps permitting. Priority will be given to those who pre-registered.

If you do not have a partner, no problem! Send us an email stating in the subject that you are looking for a partner - we'll do our best to match you with someone else who is unpartnered or add you to an existing team.

First prize will be a $30 bar tab at the Royal, 2nd prize a $20 bar tab and 3rd a $10 bar tab. Any excess funds raised will be used for various "spot prizes" which will be announced on the night.

There'll be drinks and an additional pubcrawl starting at the Royal after the event finishes.
